It’s been an up-and-down kind of day. It started with disappointing news during a phone call to the research library at the Minnesota State Historical Society. I was hoping to find a trove of material pertinent to my new nonfiction project. Unfortunately, I was informed that the MSHS has no St. Paul Saints or Minneapolis Millers material in their archives. Sure, they have newspapers, and those will be helpful, but I was really expecting them to have old game programs and other stuff related to the two Twin Cities minor league baseball franchises that Tom Sheehan had played for and managed. Oh, well. I have a consultation scheduled with an MSU librarian next week, and I’ll see what other resources might be worth investigating.

I still search the Internet regularly for information that may be useful for the project, and I almost always find something I haven’t come across before. Today I found nothing new–at least where Tom Sheehan is concerned. I did find a gem, however: mp3 files of the original radio broadcast of a Yankees – Tigers game played on September 20, 1934.

So I’ve been listening to the game while searching scanned issues of The Sporting News, circa 1915-1919, for stories mentioning Sheehan. The sound quality of the broadcast is excellent, and it’s been the perfect soundtrack for my day. (I’ve listened to the game three times). It’s a great game, but I really just like the sound of it. Ty Tyson is the primary announcer, but he often interrupts his calling of the game because he also serves as the stadium’s public address announcer. It’s very cool to hear his voice echo on the p.a. speakers as he says stuff like, “Mr Johnson, please report to the stadium office,” or “Now batting: Corsetti.” Check it out:

I have to agree with Jorge that one of the finest scenes in Apocalypse Now is the helicopter raid with Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries” blasting in 5.1 surround sound. For my money, the finest reference to Wagner’s composition in another song has to be Andrew Bird’s “Sovay.” Of course, I know of no other song that references “Ride of the Valkyries.” But still.

Here’s a live version of “Sovay,” recorded in Boulder, Colorado, featuring accompaniment by My Morning Jacket:

I Was Getting Ready To Be A Threat
I Was Getting Set For My
Accidental Suicide
The Kind Where No One Dies
No One Looks Too Surprised
Then You Realize
That You’re Riding On The Para-Success
Of A Heavy-Handed Metaphor
And A Feeling Like You’ve Been Here Before
‘Cause You’ve Been Here Before
And You’ve Been Here Before
Then A Word Washed To Shore
A Word:

Sovay, Sovay, Sovay
All Along The Day

I Was Getting Ready To Consider My Next Plan Of Attack
I Think I’m Gonna Sack
The Whole Board Of Trustees
All Those Don Quixotes In Their B-17s
And I Swear This Time Yeah This Time
They’ll Blow Us Back To The Seventies
And This Time They’re Playin Ride Of The Valkyries
With No Semblance Of Grace Or Ease
And They’re Acting On Vagaries
With Their Violent Proclivities
And They’re Playing Ride
Ride Of The Valkyries

Sovay, Sovay, Sovay
All Along The Day

“Sovay” by Andrew Bird

The song has an interesting backstory. Read about it on RealFake Blog.

I saw Killer of Sheep last night. If you’re one of the people who had to listen to me spout about it today, feel free to skip this post. But I can’t stop thinking about that film. It’s just flat-out fantastic. It’s certainly unconventional. It isn’t plot-driven, but there’s a story to it. I’m not sure, really, how to even describe it because it is so unlike most films. Have you seen Two-Lane Blacktop? Five Easy Pieces? Those are as close as I can come to comparisons. It’s slow, but not boring. Every scene is just remarkable, every fricking frame looks great. It’s artistic, but not pretensious. The soundtrack is marvelous, and the use of music in the film is better than in any movie I’ve ever seen. By the time the end credits rolled I had rearranged my all-time list of favorite films to make room for Killer of Sheep in my top 3. Apparently I’m not the only cat who thinks it’s a damn fine film.

The movie’s backstory is pretty interesting. It was filmed as director Charles Burnett’s thesis for UCLA film school in 1977. He had an engineering background, but he developed an interest in film and enrolled in the program. At the time, UCLA tuition for in-state students was $25. Yes, $25.

From the film’s web site:

Killer of Sheep was shot on location in Watts in a series of weekends on a budget of less than $10,000, most of which was grant money. Finished in 1977 and shown sporadically, its reputation grew and grew until it won a prize at the 1981 Berlin International Film Festival.

Since then, the Library of Congress has declared it a national treasure as one of the first fifty on the National Film Registry and the National Society of Film Critics selected it as one of the “100 Essential Films” of all time. However, due to the expense of the music rights, the film was never shown theatrically or made available on video. It has only been seen on poor quality 16mm prints at few and far between museum and festival showings.

Now, thirty years after its debut, the new 35mm print of Killer of Sheep, brilliantly restored by UCLA Film & Television Archive, is ready for its long-awaited international release.

Milestone’s premiere of the restored Killer of Sheep was at the 2007 Berlinale Film Festival and the theatrical release begins in Spring of this year.

Killer of Sheep official web site.

It’s available on DVD. Netflix has it.

From the soundtrack, Dinah Washington’s “This Bitter Earth”:

Here’s the trailer:

“Apocalypse Soon” is an interesting article by Jon Evans in The Walrus. It’s inevitable, Evans argues in the piece, that in the very near future most people will prefer paperless books over those made of bound paper, and the publishing industry needs to face that inevitability sooner than later. In his experience, however, they’re slow moving dinosaurs denying the new reality of free-flowing information, and by clinging to outdated business plans and copyrights, they’re losing out.

The effects of a similarly stubborn stance taken by the music industry in the face of a changing world make it easy to imagine where this will lead the publishing industry. As the preferred media for written words, ink on paper may have enjoyed a longer lifespan than the vinyl LP did for recorded music, but its replacement is so close now you can hold [a version of] it in your hands. Is that a bad thing? Not necessarily, Evans argues, and I agree.

There’s still time for the publishing industry to adapt more gracefully than the music industry has, but not much.

Here’s an excerpt from the Evans piece:

In the not-too-distant future, all books will be freely available, just as essentially all popular music is right now. Readers will decide whether books are worth buying, and if so for how much, often after they’ve read them.

I’m not thrilled about this inevitability. I want to put my first novel on-line for free to hook readers, who will, I hope, go on to purchase my subsequent work. And I want to do it now, while it’s still a perverse and hence noteworthy thing to do, to get physical sales while there’s still a reason to buy bound sheaves of paper. That’s why I’m so frustrated by my publishers’ demurral. They may not like this future, but to fight it is to play King Canute. It’s better by far to try to swim.
